Evergreen Cemetery

No Votes
Evergreen Cemetery illustrates the evolution of graveyard design from rural burying grounds to lawn park cemeteries. Although influenced by the garden movement, it has a less dramatic topography and a more engineered approach that resulted in a formality to its layout. Fairview Cemetery was developed at the end of the 19th century and the oldest section of the cemetery exemplifies the garden park cemetery movement.
Located along Mile 23 of the Boston Marathon®, this can be referred to as the Cemetery Mile. Some call this graveyard the Cemetery of Lost Hope because the stretch of road is really a no-man's-land. All of a sudden, everything goes quiet. The crowds are kept back by the trolley, and as a result it's very desolate. It's very easy to become distracted or deflated as a runner here, so keep your energy for the moral challenges facing you down this stretch.
